Soft Machine - Third

Album opener "Facelift" is a live performance which showcases undeniable saxophone riffage a la King Crimson laid on top of surreal keyboard work and synthesizer fiddling with a so-so bassline. Tape loop effects are sprinkled liberally. "Slightly All the Time" and "Out-Bloody-Rageous" are both solid jazz fusion pieces, with fine musicianship all around. "Moon In June" is my personal favorite, and the only one with vocals provided by the drummist, Robert Wyatt. His drumming is exquisite, and his singing is delightful. The lyrics are refreshingly rull. Nothing cosmic, no social messages, just poetry.

Addendum: The lyrics are refreshing compared to the rest of the music I'm listening to in the same vein, like Yes, king crimson, magma, Gentle Giant, and such.
